How do I change the headlight bulbs on a Jeep Cherokee, 1994??

Can anyone help? I cannot gain access to the rear of my Jeeps headlights so as to change the bulbs. There must be an easy method or do I have to take apart the complete housing?How do I change the headlight bulbs on a Jeep Cherokee, 1994??It`s a long job, all done from the front of the car. There is no access from under the bonnet to the back of the light housings

You need to take off various bits of trim including the dummy side light/indicator. Take off the trim around the light, this will give you access to the screws that hold the light unit in place. Carefully remove the %26quot;bezel%26quot; as it`s called and the light unit will be free to take out. Take care with the lead to the side light , the main bulb is held in place by the %26quot;usual%26quot; spring clip. When you put it all back together make sure that the lights work BEFORE you put all the trim back, it`s very easy to dislodge the side light bulb!

The procedure is covered in detail in the Haynes manual.

I`ve done this job several times, and it still takes me at least 30 mins to do !

This is how I change my Ford and may be the same for your car. I don't know for sure but it's worth a look see:

Open hood. Look at back of headlamp for 2 clips that pull up (the clips don't come completely out). With the clips pulled up, pull out the lamp assembly from the car as far as the wires will reach.

Twist the lightbulb socket until it releases from the headlamp unit.

Now you can pull out the bad bulb from the socket and replace.

Avoid touching the glass part of the new bulb with your fingers. Use a cloth or clean gloves. It's not easy, on the passenger side bulb, remove your coolant reservoir. I believe it's 3 bolts. On the drivers side, I believe it's easier if you remove the top of your air box. (I have a cold air intake, so my whole air box assembly is gone) Once you have access to the white plastic cover, turn counterclockwise to remove the covers. Then the bulb is held in by a metal clip. If you look at it closely, you must push the clip towards the front of the car, then to the side, and the clip will release and you can then change the bulb. Then re-assemble...

Even Walmart auto dept will change out a headlight for you for less than $10 labor. Bulbs will cost you less than $10, too. so for about $20, you can have someone do it for you and not get all messed up.



It's not too complicated to change a headlamp. It's just kinda hard. I know it sounds like it's same thing, but this is why. Usually the bulb is held into place by a mount with a ring that turns to lock it in. It's just a big FREAKIN' PAIN to try and turn that plastic ring, with trying to fit your hands and fingers into the small space. If it's the driver side headlamp, sometimes you've got to take out battery so you've got room to work. It's not complicated, just a hassle.

Once you've got the ring turned, you'll see how it unlocks it. It doesn't unscrew like a pop bottle cap. Then you pull out the bulb. Think you can also remove the wiring from the part first before trying to move the locking ring which helps to not damage the wires. Once out, you merely replace the bulb like changing batteries, and then reassemble the whole thing again. It's much easier to pay the $20 to let someone else do it.



IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!! If you do it yourself, you really really REALLY have to make sure that the new bulb has all your fingerprints off it. In fact, don't ever touch the bulb itself. This is why.

Bulbs are halogen which burn extremely hot, that's why they throw a brighter light down the road. But they are sooooo hot, that they can burn extremely easily. Your fingers have grease on them, part of your body's stuff. Not talking about engine or motor grease, this is a natural oil on your fingers and hands. If this gets onto the bulb, the oils from your hands will actually begin to cook, or fry, just like french fries in cookng grease, and that will cause the bulb to burn out or even maybe explode. Now the turn signals are in the fenders and so that's a different story.



To replace th eheadlights in a '96-'00 Honda Civic:



- Open the hood of the car.



- Pinch either side of the square black plug on the back of the headlight housing. They do somethign stick, and so if they do just press in one side and lean it in the opposite direction then after that pinch in the other side. That usually works for me



- Remove the black rubber boot from the back of the housing by pulling it off.



- There is a metal clip on the headlight housing behind that rubber boot. Press it n and unclip it (you'll see when you get there).



- Now the bulb is free. Remove the bulb.



- When you replace the old with the new bulb DO NOT touch the glass on the bulb! This will leave oils from your skin on the bulb and will cause it to possibly burn out faster (it heats up the outside of the bulb more).



- Do everything in reverse to replace the bulb. :)



It's pretty easy and you should probbaly pick it up after once. Your owner's manual shoudl also have illustrations in it to explain the removal and install. If you don't have that just look for two plastic tabs that push down from the top to secure the headlight assembly in place. Pull those up and the whole thing should slide right out. open you hood



there is a rubber grommet the size of a coaster thats where the bulb is located. unplug the plug (squeeze the side of the plug and it should slide right off)



remove the grommet. just pull if off away from the headlight.



the bulb is secured by a spring clip push the clip towards the front of the car and move it to one side to get it unhooked from the headlight housing.



pull the head light bulb out. replace with new head light bulb (MAKE SURE NOT TO TOUCH THE GLASS OF THE NEW BULB)



secure the bulb with the spring clip.



put rubber grommet back on



plug the harness back on the bulb.



your done
